Based on state and local sales tax, registration fees and average dealer doc fees, these are the cheapest states to buy a car. Don't go racing off to Oregon or New Hampshire, though. You'll still have to pay the sales tax in the state you're registering a vehicle.

Gosh darn it! You mean to tell me I bought my very first car in one of the states with the highest tax? Darn it Florida, the only good thing you offer is skunk ape.

The one thing it didn't touch on was state property tax. For example, when I lived in RI, a state that is dead middle of the chart, I also had to pay an annual property tax on the vehicles I owned which was based off their book value. When you factor this in, RI becomes a red state (most expensive). Here in NV I do not pay a property tax on vehicles, however, my registration amount is based off of the value of the vehicle, essentially making the two states TOTAL fees and taxes (blah blah blah) equal (or rather relatively close)

When you go through cars like I do? VERY... I believe I spent upwards of $5,000 registering vehicles in NV in 2013 alone.

Oregon FTW! Never paid more than $170 to the government after a vehicle acquisition.

Could have bought another car with the money I spent in registration (granted, I got to write some of it off on my taxes so I got some money back but still...)

Ehh. It gets to be more of a headache than anything. Especially if you own a house, because then there is ALWAYS something that needs fixed either in the garage or in the house, and you never have enough time to fix everything.

You have a house too! Now I'm really jealous, lol. I'm looking into either trading in my car for one with better mpg, or wait til it's paid off (1.5 years) then get a 2nd one. Decisions...

I will take high ass sales tax so long as i never pay state income tax. Also, for the record, actual combat veterans should be permanently exempted from Federal income tax for life. Not their dependents, not their wives, and also not veterans who did not spend time downrange firing rounds in anger and being fired at in anger. #endtaxrant

Also factor in every other year registration, or every 4 years on a new car, it is a damn nice perk. And it is a flat fee

See that funny looking state on the southeastern corner of Missouri? Tennessee? That's where I came from. The fourth most expensive state to buy a car, and I went to college in Alabama, the most expensive state.
Compared to those, Kansas is a welcome relief.

For most of Wisconsin:
$69.50 title fee + 5.5% of purchase price for state and local tax + $75 license plate fee + $10 if there is a loan on the vehicle + $5 if you apply in person at a DMV location.
Their example of a $16,500 used car comes in at $1,062 to register it.
The last time I bought a private-party used car it was $500, and I had to pay $172 to register it.

Guess they don't consider that Hawaii adds 5-10k to the base price of the car beacuase of "market value". Even though you already pay a slightly higher destination fee.
